A trip to Africa should not, cannot, be a one-off journey. The continent is too big – 54 countries – and the experiences too vast. A friend once said, it is like your very favourite chocolate cake - you wouldn’t attempt to gorge it all in one go and then never eat another bite. Here at Brelade, we consider Zambia to be the pick of the crop for safari, combining an outstanding level of luxury accommodation and attentive services, in a friendly and generous environment. The lodges in this area tend towards the opulent. And unlike many other safari locations, it shies away from the package holiday crowds!
The Lower Zambezi National Park is in southern Zambia, on the Zimbabwean border. Set in over 4,000 square kilometres of wilderness, it is abundant with wildlife, and many areas in the region have been designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. As the mighty Zambezi River flows with a more relaxed current in this wide river valley than most of its 1,600 mile journey to the Indian Ocean, it provides watering for herds of Elephants and Buffalo, Crocodiles, African Wild Dog, not to mention Leopard and prides of Lion. Hippo and Tigerfish fill the waters, that turn bright orange at sunset and stretch across to Mana Pools in Zimbabwe. Some 400 species of birds reside here providing from the majestic, often solitary Fish Eagle to the flocks of vibrantly coloured Bee-Eaters that fill the skies when the colony is on the move.
Brelade understands that many of its clients are time poor, so to facilitate this constant conundrum we are able to create long haul short-stay magical encounters for our clients, just like the illustration below. Experience one – and then return for another!
Knowledge: Our Operations Director, Laurence, worked in the Lower Zambezi following his training in South Africa, building camps, hosting and guiding. Our Media and Marketing Advisor, Michael, was MD of a safari operator with lodges and camps in The Lower Zambezi and Victoria Falls.
Nights: 5
Price: from £800 per person per night [excluding international flights, and based on 2 people sharing]
This short break captures the essence of the traditional 'safari' with its origins in the Arabic word 'safar' – a journey – moving from one lodge or camp to the next, sampling the very best experiences at each.
Awe-inspiring lifetime memories, the Big Five and much more – river, bush and lodge luxury.

Guests are greeted at Lusaka International Airport, Zambia and flown by private air-taxi to Jeki Airstrip in Lower Zambezi National Park. Cool drinks and snacks will be offered before a Bush drive which will almost certainly provide viewing opportunities close up of Elephant, Giraffe, Lion and much more.
On arrival at the family owned and operated, multi-award-winning Chiawa Camp, guests will be given a full safety briefing, be introduced to the team and settled into their accommodation.
Relax, swim in the pool, dine on fine food prepared by the Camp’s acclaimed kitchen brigade and enjoy the amazing sunset. After cocktails and dinner, there is time to sit around the fire and chat with other guests and the guides.
An early start today. Guests will spend the day canoeing on the mighty Zambezi River. Unlike other parts, the flow here is calm, with an abundance of wildlife both in the water and on the river banks.
You will canoe downstream with the Chiawa Camp river-guides, exploring narrow channels between the many river islets.
Lunch will be prepared and awaiting your arrival on one of the deserted islands, before you continue to Amanzi Tented Camp on the banks of the Ngwenya channel, for dinner and a good night’s sleep.
Today, guests will take an all-day guided walk through the Bush – approximately 12 kilometres. The final destination is actually only 3 kilometres, in a straight line, however we feel the 'scenic' route is well worth the time.
A walking safari is as much a state of mind as a physical experience. The trappings of western life left far behind, guests experience an intimacy with the wilderness, understand how wildlife live their lives – with the flexibility to track across terrain to approach big game and investigate small insects close up. Sounds ordinarily drowned out by the motor engine become important, along with the aromas normally masked by diesel. With feet on the ground, you can synchronise with the rhythm of nature.
The leisurely pace will be punctuated with breaks for morning coffee and afternoon tea, and a waiter serviced lunch, set in a spectacular, shaded clearing. The walk ends at Anabezi Camp – a true gem, built as the Governor's retreat when the area was a British colony.
View the majesty of the river from your private deck and pool as the sun retreats for the day, before enjoying an exquisite fine-dining dinner and all the pleasures an award-winning river camp can offer.
Take the opportunity to sleep in late, enjoy a full brunch, spend time around the Anabezi Camp quizzing the guides on their bushcraft knowledge, and relaxing.
Start the evening with an early dinner taken on your private deck, before preparing for a night drive through the bush to the exclusive Sausage Tree Camp.
Exploring Africa after dark brings new experiences – unique bush encounters from Leopard and Wild Dogs on the hunt for their own dinner, and grazing Hippos to Chameleons, glowing Scorpions, and the tart smelling night flowers of the Baobab tree. A treat for all the senses all under the vast, starry African night-sky.
Guests will arrive at Sausage Tree Camp in the early hours of the morning, be served with snacks and nightcaps before settling into their luxury accommodation – the epitome of 'bush chic' with lavish attention to detail and voted top in the list of 'Ten Best Luxury Destinations’.
Rise later in the morning, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and the day is yours.
The guides will be pleased to take you back on the river in a motor boat to cast a line and endeavour to land the notorious Tigerfish, spend time exploring camp or take a 4x4 drive to attempt more Big 5 sightings.
Lunch will be served on the river, in the Bush or in Camp – whatever your wish. Dinner can be at the hosted camp table or you will be welcome to opt for a romantic candle-lit table for two on your private deck.
Breakfast, goodbyes, and a Bush drive to Jeki Airstrip for a private air-taxi to Lusaka International Airport for your return flight to your country of origin.
Extensions: This safari may be extended to include a stay at the highly acclaimed Tongabezi Lodge at Victoria Falls before catching a flight out from Victoria Falls International Airport.
Back to your daily routines, but now Africa will never be out of your mind. Yes, it was that special, for some even life-changing. We look forward to hearing all about your adventures and we'll be here when you are ready to make the call and book your return.
All the best from the Brelade Travel team!
