From the Norman French indicating five, the 'Cinque' ports are an historic confederation of port towns on the English south coast – Sandwich, Dover, Hythe, New Romney and Hastings were originally built up on military and maritime trading, but are now purely ceremonial. They lay along the eastern end of the English Channel, where access to the continent is narrowest, some 22 miles.
All the original ports are located in the county of Kent, except Hastings – which being the furthest west, is in the county of East Sussex. In time, Rye was also designated a Cinque Port when New Romney became silted up having received significant storm damage during the South of England Flood in 1287 that almost destroyed the town.

Taking in four of the five ancient Cinque Ports, this UK based walking 'safari' will be of interest to seasoned ramblers.
Covering an average of 12 miles per day of easy to medium terrain along the Kent coast, with each evening relaxing in a luxury hotel – with pool, spa and massage included to squeeze out any aches and pains, before cocktails and fine dining.
We think this walking safari spans a number of difficulty levels from easy through moderate, with a few short areas of strenuous walking.

Guests can be met at City Airport or Ashford International Rail Station and driven in a luxury car to Eastwell Manor, an exquisite 5* Country House hotel, which will be base camp for the duration of the 'safari'.
There is an opportunity to take in a swim, spa, or walk in the extensive grounds before being served cocktails and a fine-dining dinner, especially prepared and cooked by the hotel’s talented chef.
After a Full Kent Breakfast, guests will be driven to the edge of the Kent village of Sandwich to start their first day's walk.
The suggested walk will take guests from Sandwich Bay, along Deal seafront, past the historic Time-Ball Tower, Deal Castle and Walmer Castle.
Lunch will be taken at the beach-front Zetland Arms, where a specially prepared meal will have been arranged, before guests venture on their way over the iconic White Cliffs to the busy port of Dover.
Guests will be driven back to Eastwell Manor, and before a fine-dining dinner, there will be time for a full Swedish massage to knead knots and tightness deep in walked-out muscles, setting them up well for Day 2's continuing adventure!
After a Full Kent Breakfast, guests will be driven to Dover Western Docks to start their walk over Samphire Hoe, an opportunity to take in the diverse natural habitat and dramatic views of the chalk cliffs, and across the busiest shipping route in the world to the coast of France.
Guests continue into the old town of Folkestone, an area becoming increasingly known as an enclave for artists and other creatives. Lunch is arranged at celebrity chef-owned Rocksalt Restaurant, located overlooking the traditional fishing harbour.
The afternoon trek takes in The Leas, Sandgate, and Hythe seafront, before guests are driven back to Eastwell Manor to indulge in a variety of spa treatments – with a selection especially designed for men – before a sumptuous fine-dining dinner.
After a Full Kent Breakfast, guests will be driven to the Royal Military Canal in Hythe. Today's suggested walk starts along the canal tow path, before guests are invited to step aboard a narrow gauge steam train that will transport them the 13 or so miles to Dungeness, Britain's only desert.
From here guests walk through the RSPB Nature Reserve - a perfect migration hub for an array of birds and a highly biodiverse site known for it's insects and large number of rare bee species – before pushing on towards Camber Sands for lunch at the notable Gallivant Hotel.
The final leg of this varied day navigates our guests into the quaint town and medieval citadel of Rye, before guests are driven back to Eastwell Manor, to enjoy a pre-arranged massage, spa and swim before a delectable and well-earned fine-dining dinner.
After a Full Kent Breakfast, guests will have time to enjoy all the hotel facilities or opt for a trip to the ancient cathedral city of Canterbury, before being driven a designated departure point for their onward travel.
